the haunting of hill house book

Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after tragedy strikes again, and they are all forced to confront how their time in Hill House had affected each of them. The book has been adapted to film twice, in 1963 and again in 1999, both times under the title The Haunting. An instinct tells her to leave, but she stays and meets the house’s caretakers, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley. They are unwelcoming and urge her to go away, saying that they refuse to stay at the house after dark.

Whenever you read anything about the Haunting of Hill House, you’ll see it described as ‘one of the best ghost stories of all time’. My copy has a quote by Stephen King describing it as ‘nearly as perfect a haunted house tale as I have ever read’. It’s described as a horror book, a ghost story in the old mould of Victorian England and so on. The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson’s 1959 horror novel, is one of the American novelist and short story writer’s best-known works. The novel is told from the perspective of its unreliable protagonist Eleanor, and it is an example of a subgenre known as the psychological ghost story.

It allows her, supposedly, to communicate with Nell, a spirit living in the house. The other characters make the connection between the name “Nell” and their companion Eleanor. The group starts to separate themselves from her, worried that something else is going on. Stephen King, in his book Danse Macabre (1981), a non-fiction review of the horror genre, lists The Haunting of Hill House as one of the finest horror novels of the late 20th century and provides a lengthy review. Later in their stay, the doctor's wife, the haughty Mrs. Montague, and her companion Arthur Parker, the headmaster of a boys' school, arrive to spend a weekend at Hill House and help investigate it.

Many modern authors continue to draw from these works, creating new stories that explore the human psyche and bring an element of terror and suspense to their readers. Works such as ‘The Haunting of Hill House‘ by Shirley Jackson have become classic examples of this genre. Shirley Jackson might seem an unlikely pioneer of the supernatural horror genre.

The story itself is an interesting one even if it strays from both the 60s film and the book’s source material in a few major ways. It had the potential to be both interesting and frightening but falls flat completely in the latter and is woefully mishandled in the former. The score, here done by Oscar winner Jerry Goldsmith, is a high point for 90% of the movie but even it lets us down in a few key moments of the film. Finally, for all the complaints about the CGI that I have, the set design, sound design, and set decoration are incredible. I could look at the mansion and everything inside of it for hours.

‘The Haunting of Hill House‘ is a chilling novel about the mysterious phenomena in Hill House, an older home with a tragic and complicated past. The book details the many horrifying occurrences the characters experience and how one main character, Eleanor, handles them. This adaptation is an overt fantasy horror in which all the main characters are terrorized and two are killed by explicitly supernatural deaths. Listed in a The New York Times poll in 2018 as “the scariest book of fiction” by participants, the novel is a must read for all the fans of horror and mystery genres. When Theodora finds the words HELP ELEANOR COME HOME ELEANOR written in blood on her walls, she lashes out at Eleanor, who she suspects is doing these things to get attention.

It’s not good enough to be, well, good, and not bad enough to fall under our awfully good banner. It’s regrettably boring and a frustrating watch to see good actors fall flat with a script that takes a great idea and story and does its best to scuttle the whole thing. The Haunting doesn’t need further study to show it falls short of standing the Test of Time.

In this version, the industrialist Hugh Crain financed the construction of Hill House in the 1860’s. The house was a beautiful but forbidding mansion where Crain hoped to house a wife and children. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and the narrative implies that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. Eleanor realizes that she can hear any sound that occurs inside the house, no matter which room she is in.

Taunted and harassed by the younger sister and the townspeople, the young woman hanged herself, reportedly in the house’s turret. All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls, and other unexplained events. Eleanor tends to experience phenomena to which the others are oblivious. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and it is implied that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. This possibility is suggested especially by references early in the novel to Eleanor's childhood memories about episodes of a poltergeist-like entity that seemed to target her home.

Dr. Montague later publishes his study, but his colleagues ridicule his findings. Mrs. Montague, a parapsychologist, arrives at Hill House with her friend, Arthur. Belittling her husband and his lack of progress, she confidently declares that she will draw out Hill House’s spirits.

She is just beginning to explore her freedom and is elated to have found a new friend. Hoping to cause a sensation in the field of parapsychology, Dr. John Montague rents Hill House, a secluded manor with a reputation for being haunted. Luke stands to inherit Hill House after his aunt dies, and Luke’s aunt sends him to watch over the house and deter amateur ghost hunters. She also wants to keep Luke out of trouble since he is a liar and a thief.

The group bond almost immediately, but fear is a corrosive emotion and the house's manifestations soon cause cracks to appear. A series of dark events occur around the home, including the death of Hugh Crain’s wife (the man who built the home). She died in a carriage crash and never spent any time in the home. Years passed, Dr. Montague explained, and the house passed from Hugh to his eldest daughter’s caretaker, a woman who (after being harassed by the locals) hanged herself. Dr. Montague explains to the other three characters and to the reader, that the house is eighty years old and was originally designed in the shape of a confusing, circular maze. The layout of the home is one of the reasons that the many events that take place there are so terrifying.
